How To Make Your Alibi More Believable

For some reason, you have to make an alibi. Willingly or unwillingly, you have to make that alibi believable. Here are some suggestions on how.

Your Mom unexpectedly called you and she’s coming over your apartment. At that moment, you were drinking with your new classmates.

A die-hard Christian, your Mom would kill you if she knew you were drinking. Intoxicated and startled, the best way is to avoid getting caught is just to turn off your cellphone.

“Sorry, Mom. My battery died when you called and I spent the whole night in my classmate’s apartment. It

took us until 4AM discussing about the Book of Revelations. We even had midnight meal. It was great- my classmate can cook teriyaki very well.”

First of all, nobody wants to be a chronic liar. Once you started lying on trivial things, you would surely make it a habit lying even unnecessarily. It’s like a disease that traps an unwilling liar. We should not lie as much as possible but due to unprecedented circumstances, we have to lie.

When telling a “credible lie”, you must loosen up. How do you do that? Simple- just believe that you will never get caught.

In such cases that alibis are necessary, there are some things you need to bear in mind if you don’t want to get caught eventually. These are consistency, details, and mystery.

Change is not the only constant thing on Earth. The truth is we also have the truth. The truth is an unchanging thing. So if you are making an alibi, observe consistency. Study all the perspectives of your alibi and memorize it. Master your

alibi and it will sound like the truth.

You need to support your alibi with details. That will make it more credible. It will lead other people to imagining what had happened and their mental representation of your alibi will be established as fact to them. Just make sure that your details are credible and consistent.

It is not necessary for you to tell all the details of your alibi. Even when we tell a real event, we don’t give all the details. Leave some missing parts and your fictional alibi will sound like a fact.

In some cases, you are confronted by situations when you have to make up an impromptu alibi. Start with some details, whatever comes out in your mouth but do it carefully and slowly. Remember, you have to memorize and repeat those details. You will surely be demanded with more answers and you are not prepared to give. Just refuse giving an answer. You could say, “Is it necessary for me to tell that?”, “Is that relevant?”, “I don’t know the best way to say it but…” and while bargaining, do some multitasking- think of the answers. Then, heave a deep sigh and say, “Okay… this is the truth. I don’t know if this is the right way to say this but…”

And there you go! It takes a cunning liar to make up a believable alibi.
